The granddad of tourism in the Med, Benidorm is the Costa Blanca's, biggest holiday playground. The possibilities here seem almost endless – an excellent beach, entertainment till dawn, shops a plenty and excursions planned for every day of the week. Popular with families, couples, singles and mature holidaymakers there’s just no way anyone, of any age, could possibly be bored here!
Some refer to Benidorm’s skyline as “Manhatten of the Med”. Its hotel skyscrapers huddle self-consciously behind a swathe of golden sand and sparkling Mediterranean.
The beach is divided by a rocky promenade into two - Poniente and Levante (Spanish for sunrise and sunset). Benidorm has a third beach Mal Pas, equally as impressive.
All of Benidorm’s beaches are Blue Flag and have ample facilities and water sports. While a beach backed by skyscrapers may seem unsightly the sunsets here are impressive.
Come early evening you’ll find a glint in old Benidorm’s eye as the sun bounces from one hotel window to another, ensuring a spectacular golden light show.
What’s not to love about Benidorm’s down to earth character – whether its fish n chips, bacon n eggs or good old pub grub there’s a taste of home around every corner.
Head out of your comfort zone though and you can try a hundred different cuisines right on your hotel doorstep. Special praise must be given to the Spanish “menu del dia” or menu of the day, which is very popular on these shores and gives a hearty meal at a great price.
Don’t be afraid to try some Spanish tapas or paella - just because it’s Benidorm doesn’t mean you won’t enjoy an authentic meal. The best restaurants to enjoy local cuisine can be found in the old harbour. And there are good al la carte options available if you want to splash out.
As one of Spain’s largest resorts there’s a real mix of authentic crafts, souvenirs and designer goods on sale in Benidorm’s central shopping area. Familiar high street names and well known brands are widely available. Leather, lace, cigarettes and alcohol are all good buys. Market day is held every Wednesday and Sunday for those who love a good rummage for bargains.
One word – legendary. From Elvis impersonators to cabaret, from flamenco dancers to fire-eaters – there’s a bar or venue to suit every mood. They say variety is the spice of life and this definitely applies to Benidorm – perhaps you fancy a spot of ballroom dancing or a night of bingo; a full on foam party or a comedy show, it’s all here you just need to find it. A relaxing night may be more difficult to find – but that’s available too if you head to some of the smaller bars in the old town.
Where do you begin? The beaches might be a good start with their wide choice of water sports. Thrill seekers will love Terra Mitca, Spain’s largest theme park located on the outskirts of town. Mundomar Marine Animal Park, Terra Natura, Aitana Safari Park and Aqualandia Waterpark are just a tiny fraction of the family attractions available.
If you’re happier on the water, or under it, there’s a myriad of boat trips exploring the coast or even a submarine experience.
The Costa Blanca isn’t just about beaches, there’s some spectacular countryside, and exploring further a field is well worth the effort. Cycling, off road jeep safaris and walking tours are all available. Alicante, Algar Waterfalls and Canelobre Caves all make good day excursions.
